Materials with stimuli-switchable properties are widespread in nature. Through biomimicry, stimuli-responsive hydrogels have received increasing research recent years. In particular, stimuli-tunable mechanical provide an important platform for designing new materials specific applications such as 3D printing, soft robot, and tunable adhesion. Herein, the state-of-the-art of toughness is reviewed detail. Characteristic reinforcement mechanisms fully discussed first, followed by systematical demonstrations various smart responding to stimuli. special attention paid thermal, light, pH, salt triggers because their broad easy implementation. Furthermore, these included. addition overview advances, we finally summarize critical challenges current discoveries make outlook following work, which anticipate lead substantial progress responsive future.

Autonomous microfluidics with stimuli-responsive hydrogels
There has been increasing interest in integrated microfluidic systems because performing biological and chemical laboratory tasks on a single chip is appealing. One straightforward approach to constructing these ‘lab on chips’ is to fabricate individual components and to assemble them for desired functionalities. As the functionalities of the microfluidic systems become increasingly complicated...
متن کاملStimuli-Responsive Dipeptide-Protein Hydrogels through Schiff Base Coassembly.
Different from the conventional irreversible covalent conjugations, a simple and efficient dynamic Schiff base covalent assembly is developed to construct the stable and smart dipeptide-protein hydrogels under mild conditions. Diphenylalanine-hemoglobin hydrogel is chosen to investigate the gelation formation process and mechanism. It is found that such assembled dipeptide-protein hydrogels are...
متن کاملStimuli-Responsive Hydrogels and Their Application to Functional Materials
Many kinds of stimuli-responsive polymer gels that respond to the change in their surroundings such as solvent composition, temperature, pH, and supply of electric field have been developed. They are of interest as intelligent (or smart, biomimetic) materials which have sensor, processor, and actuator functions. This article is related to stimuliresponsive gels and their application for bioor b...
متن کاملMultiple Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogels for Metal-Based Drug Therapy
A series of homopolymeric and copolymeric hydrogels containing the N-isopropylacrylamide and vinyl monomers with α-amino acid (L-valine and L-phenylalanine) residues have been synthesized and their swelling properties were evaluated under different external stimulations. The hydrogels, obtained with different cross-linking agents (EBA and PEG-DA), have shown unique properties such as biocompati...
متن کاملMolecular model for toughening in double-network hydrogels.
A molecular mechanism is proposed for the toughness enhancement observed in double-network (DN) hydrogels prepared from poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) polyelectrolyte network and poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) linear polymer. It is an extension of the phenomenological model set forth recently by Gong et al. ( Macromolecules 2007, 40, 6658- 6664 ). This mechanism rationalize...
